KUCHING, May 5: The Sarawak Tourism and Trade Office Singapore (Statos) invited 14 business representatives from China and two from Singapore on a three-day study tour to seek opportunities with the business fraternities in Sarawak.

Director of Singapore Economics and Management Institute, Lai Cheng Yi, said they are bringing the Chinese business representatives to Malaysia and Sarawak to give them exposure and business opportunities in the region and vice versa.

“These Chinese representatives are business partners in Singapore. They are pursuing opportunities via China President Xi Jinping’s One Belt One Road initiative, where Malaysia is on their road map for business.

“This is the first time that these Chinese representatives are here as part of the Singapore and Sarawak business delegation programme,” he said to reporters at Kuching International Airport (KIA) yesterday (May 4).

Lai continued to say that since he has business partnerships in Sarawak, he encouraged his Chinese counterparts to come here to seek business opportunities.

He said they are meeting with a few companies during the study tour in solar panel businesses, education, logistics, and engineering.

“We hope that our networking dinner organised by our local partner here would be a platform to meet the business community and government representatives to know about policy and investment regulations.”

A delegate member Xiong Bing, who represents an engineering company, said it is an opportunity to come to the region and to understand the local business culture and the people.

“I am glad that businesses in Sarawak are Chinese oriented as that would make the language easier. I welcome any company to contact me and to explore opportunities in China,” he said.
