KUCHING, Aug 29: Fifteen victims from Batu Kawa fire yesterday (Aug 28) are still struggling to secure a place to relocate.

Michael Kong Feng Nian, special assistant to Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen, said he has visited Dewan Perpaduan RPR Batu Kawa along with several DAP members to extend their support and solidarity to the fire victims this morning.

“It was heartening to see that some of the fire victims had managed to find temporary accommodations. However, my concern grew when I learned that 15 victims were still struggling to secure a place to relocate.

“As an immediate solution, they have been temporarily housed at Dewan Perpaduan RPR Batu Kawah until suitable arrangements can be made for their shelter,” he said in a statement today.

At the same time, Kong commended the dedicated efforts of the staff from Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) and Social Welfare Department (JKM), who were working diligently to address the immediate needs of the fire victims.

“They are providing essential assistance to these families, ensuring that their basic requirements for food and shelter are met.

“Additionally, the Welfare Department is conducting counselling sessions to help the victims cope with the trauma and stress caused by the incident,” he elaborated.

He also said he was informed that the JKM is assessing the financial impact on these affected families whereby financial assistance will be provided to mitigate their losses and the department will determine the appropriate amount based on individual circumstances. — DayakDaily
