135 people flee rising flood waters in several squatter areas in Bintulu

BINTULU, Nov 28: A total of 135 people from 45 families in Bintulu were evacuated from their houses early this morning due to a major flood in Kidurong Avenue, Sg Plan and Sg Sebatang squatters areas.

After hours-long of heavy rain that triggered flash floods last night, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee secretariat Major Ismail Mahedin said the evacuees were relocated to Stadium Muhibbah here after their homes were inundated by up to three feet of water.

ā€œThe relief centre was opened at 1.39am to accommodate 135 people from 45 affected families including 10 elderly and six babies.

Meanwhile, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) personnel from Bintulu were deployed to assist in the evacuation and monitor the situation.

Bomba operations centre said as at 10.07pm last night, they received 25 emergency calls from residents in the area asking for help. -DayakDaily
