KUCHING, Dec 18: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as expected captured Gedong with a majority of 3,607 votes in the 12th Sarawak Election.
Abang Johari who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) president polled 4,310 votes against Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) candidate Mohamad Sofian Fariz Sharbini who garnered 703, Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) candidate Tomson Ango (157 votes) and Parti Amanah Negara candidate Kamal Bujang (94 votes).
There are in total 7,206 eligible voters in the constituency with 5,264 of them (73.05 per cent) coming out to vote.
Abang Johari was the assemblyman for eight terms in Satok but in this election, he decided to move to Gedong to contest instead.
His reason for moving to Gedong was that he wanted to develop Gedong, which is a rural constituency. He hoped to bring it into mainstream development to be on par with other constituencies in Sarawak. ā DayakDaily
