KUCHING, Nov 3: A viral one-minute video showing a group of youths rioting with weapons at Miri Waterfront has led to the arrest of 11 local males aged between 16 and 25, police confirmed today.
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the incident occurred at about 2.05am on Nov 2, where a minor altercation, believed to have started from a mere shoulder bump, escalated into a violent fight involving weapons.
“One male victim suffered injuries and received treatment at Miri Hospital. He is reported to be in stable condition,” Mohd Farhan said in a statement.
Following swift action on the same day, police arrested 11 suspects and seized several weapons believed to have been used during the brawl.
The case is being investigated under Sections 324 and 148 of the Penal Code for causing hurt with a weapon and rioting.
Police have since obtained remand orders for the suspects. The first group was remanded from Nov 2 to Nov 5, while the second group was remanded from Nov 3 to Nov 6, to assist in investigations.
Mohd Farhan urged the public not to speculate or spread sensitive content related to the case on social media, as such actions may cause unnecessary alarm among the community.
