11-year-old drowning victim found

KUCHING, Mar 11: The body of drowned 11-year-old boy, who went missing three days ago, was found floating some 2.5km past Kampung Buntal, this afternoon.

Fire and Rescue department (Bomba) operations centre said the victim, identified as Zainal Arif Johari, was discovered by fishermen along Sungai Buntal estuary heading to the sea at 3.30pm.

The fishermen saw a floating body and immediately contacted the Bomba command post (PKOB) located at the jetty area.


Following the identification made by his father, Zainal’s body was brought back to the village jetty and handed over to police for further action.

On March 9, Zainal was feared drowned after he fell from the jetty while fishing with his friends at Kampung Buntal.

SAR operation involving Bomba, their divers and K9 unit, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Civil Defence Force (APM), People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) and local villagers was immediately mounted.

Villagers also continued the search at night, hoping to find his body. —DayakDaily
