SSC and UPM to ink MoU to realise state’s vision as sport powerhouse

KUCHING, March 5: University Putra Malaysia (UPM) will ink a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) to run its Sports Sciences Masters Programme starting in March 2021.

SSC chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee said the collaboration includes the usage of SSC facilities for the masters programme and to do research and innovation excellence, sports facilities and infrastructure excellence and recognition and performance excellence, which will lead to high performance environment where SSC is able to supply talent in vital sports and innovative lead approach toward sports.

“Part of the MoU is the masters programme and also to utilise their expertise in sports sciences to achieve the state’s vision as a sport power house,” he said in a statement today.

Ong noted UPM has been recognised by the world as ranked 132 in QS Global World Ranking 2021 and as among the top three prestigious research universities in Malaysia in 2015.

Thus, he said, with high-quality academicians and expertise SSC will also gain benefit in order to achieve the vision.

“With the current situation of pandemic, SSC is able to indirectly help the athletes, coaches and sports enthusiast to save at least 50 per cent or more of the initial expenses for traveling and living by being able to bring the education near to their home.

“The enrollment of the programme is ongoing and will be closing soon. We are inviting all sports enthusiasts on behalf of UPM who are interested in this programme to contact Madam Hani (012 857 6822) to know more detail about this programme,” he added.

According to the statement, the MoU between SSC and UPM will be signed in the near future by Minister of Youth and Sports Sarawak Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. — DayakDaily
