MIRI, Nov 10: A stretch of road along KM12 of Jalan Samling which is a timber road has collapsed, following heavy rain since yesterday, cutting off critical road access for some 10,000 residents in the interiors of Baram.

According to frequent road user Dominic Kallang, the collapse was noticed early this morning.

“The incident has made the road impassable to any vehicle as a wide hole prevents them from passing through,” he said when contacted today.

Many travellers have been forced to turn back since yesterday due to the road collapse, he added.

The road provides the only land access for Baram folks travelling from the interior to and from Miri, as well as to the nearest town of Lapok.

No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

It was believed that the collapse was due to unstable soil conditions after the heavy downpour.

The site of the collapse is located near KM10, which is about 80km from Lapok town. — DayakDaily
