KUCHING, Aug 25: Ten positive animal rabies cases were detected in Sarawak since Aug 10, the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) reported today.
DVSS director Dr Adrian Susin Ambud said four of the 10 cases were recorded in Kuching, namely at Jalan Selangan Batu, Taman Hui Sing, Milan Square Jalan Wan Alwi, and Jalan Chawan.
Two cases follow this in PadawanāKampung Tematu and Taman Indah Landeh; one case at Jalan Stakan Kota Sentosa, Samarahan; one at Pasar Lama Tebedu, Serian; one at Kampung Bagak, Lundu; and one at Batu 8, Jalan Bintulu-Miri, Bintulu.
Dr Adrian further said the DVSS, together with local councils, the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS), and the Sarawak Health Department, have been actively monitoring the rabies situation and intensified anti-rabies vaccination programmes throughout the State.
This coming weekend, DVSS will organise rabies vaccination programmes at Public Hall Sepupuk, Niah in Miri from Aug 26 to 27, 9am to 4pm; Public Stadium Song in Kapit on Aug 26, from 9am to 4pm; and SJK Chung Hua Sungai Tapang Hilir, MJC in Kuching on Aug 26, from 8am to 3pm.
āWe would like to appeal to all dog owners to send their animals for rabies vaccination as it is made mandatory under Section 40, Dog Vaccination Order under Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999. Dog owners must be responsible for ensuring their pet is vaccinated.
āAfter the vaccination, dog owners are to quarantine and isolate their dogs for 28 days to let them build immunity against rabies. They must ensure their dogs are kept within their home compound only. Therefore, I would like to remind the public to take extra precautions and go to a clinic if bitten by an animal,ā he said in a statement today. ā DayakDaily
