10 individuals arrested, 137 fake firearms seized in toy shops raid

KUCHING, Jan 12: Police detained 10 individuals and seized 137 replica firearms during a raid on five premises selling toys in Kuching and Samarahan.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mancha Ata said the raid was made after the police received information on activities of selling fake firearms to the public at these toy shops.

As a result of the raid, the police detained three men and seven local women ages 19 to 46, and seized 67 fake rifles and 70 fake pistols.

The police also confiscated 344 packets and 18 bottles containing plastic ammunition.

Mancha said, the case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960.

He also reminded that the act of possessing, buying or selling fake firearms is a criminal offence no matter what the reason.

“If convicted of an offence, may be imposed of imprisonment not exceeding one year or a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or both,” he said.

The police will continue to carry out operations and monitor against the sale of fake firearms throughout Sarawak.
