BARCELONA, March 4: Sarawak is stepping up its digital transformation as ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation Sdn Bhd joins forces with SACOFA Sdn Bhd to expand fast and reliable internet access, including in rural and remote areas.
According to a media release, the partnership was formalised through a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona on March 2, aimed at enhancing Sarawak’s digital infrastructure in support of the State government’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) and Sarawak Digital Economy 2030 agenda.
The collaboration reinforces a long-term drive to bring reliable and sustainable connectivity to underserved communities across the state.
Under the strategic framework, both parties will roll out next-generation connectivity solutions, including Rural Pilot base stations to enable efficient and scalable coverage growth. Advanced fibre technologies such as GPON and XGS-PON, high-speed Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), and trusted Public Wi-Fi platforms will provide fast, secure last-mile connectivity.
To overcome infrastructure challenges in remote areas, the partnership will utilise hybrid microwave and satellite backhaul systems, alongside solar and hybrid-powered green energy solutions. Intelligent remote monitoring platforms will support autonomous operations.
ZTE’s solutions, combined with SACOFA’s statewide network modernisation efforts, aim to accelerate broadband access to homes, longhouses, schools, healthcare facilities, and enterprises, particularly in locations where fibre deployment is logistically challenging.
ZTE Malaysia confirmed that the network modernisation initiative with SACOFA is progressing as planned, achieving key milestones and contributing to Sarawak’s broader digital transformation goals.
ZTE Malaysia managing director Steven Ge expressed pride in backing Sarawak’s digital transformation journey.
“By combining advanced fibre access, high-performance FWA, trusted public Wi-Fi platforms, integrated rural base stations, and smart green energy systems, we aim to deliver scalable, secure connectivity tailored to Sarawak’s diverse landscape.
“The success of our collaboration with SACOFA reflects our commitment to technological excellence and long-term partnership. We look forward to supporting Sarawak’s ambition to become a leading digital economy in the region,” he said.
SACOFA chief executive officer Jafer Sadig Abdul Lathiff emphasised that Sarawak’s high-income and digital ambitions require forward-looking infrastructure and trusted technology partners.
“Strengthening our collaboration with ZTE Malaysia accelerates rural connectivity via fibre, FWA, and secure public Wi-Fi, ensuring inclusive access to digital services for all Sarawakians. This partnership is key to advancing PCDS 2030 and Sarawak Digital Economy 2030, modernising the statewide network, and reinforcing SACOFA’s role as Sarawak’s leading telecommunications provider,” he said.
The ongoing collaboration highlights a shared commitment to innovation, reliable delivery, and long-term network resilience. — DayakDaily
