KUCHING, Jan 29: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has called for swift and firm police action following incidents of vandalism and theft at the Lorong 2 Recreation Park in the Stampin Resettlement Scheme.

The park, which was only recently upgraded using public funds, was found to have sustained damage and losses involving solar lighting units and newly installed outdoor exercise equipment.

Yap, together with officers from Kuching South City Council (MBKS), conducted an on-site inspection and confirmed that several facilities had been damaged or stolen, depriving residents of amenities intended to enhance safety, health and community well-being.

“The park was recently upgraded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) at a cost of RM100,000 and was completed on Nov 21, 2025.

“The project featured a pickleball court, spectator platform, solar-powered lighting and outdoor exercise equipment for families, senior citizens and youth,” he said in a statement today.

Describing the incident as irresponsible and unacceptable, Yap strongly condemned the acts of vandalism and theft, stressing that such behaviour undermines community development efforts, wastes public funds and robs residents of facilities built for their benefit.

He urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and apprehend those responsible without delay, emphasising that firm enforcement is necessary to deter repeat offences and to send a clear message that crimes against public property will not be tolerated.

“The people deserve better. Facilities built with public funds must be respected, not destroyed,” he added.

Both the project contractor and MBKS have lodged police reports, and investigations are currently underway. — DayakDaily
