KUCHING, Aug 29: Minister of Tourism, Youth and Culture Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzan urged the state’s youth to leverage on the potential of the digital economy, especially in terms of employment, especially at the international level.

According to Abdul Karim, the digital economy development in the country must be fully utilised by the youth as they are the main information and communication technology (ICTs) consumer, in order to benefit from various initiative implemented by the government.

“At the moment, Sarawak government, through the cooperation from the private agencies, has implemented various initiatives such as ‘Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy 2018-2022’, where one of the main objective is to improve the employment of the youth,” said Abdul Karim in his speech at the State Level National Youth Day celebration held at a local hotel today.

Although Abdul Karim elaborated that various initiatives had also been introduced to develop the digital economy, he said that the government was aware that the digital economic approach may be quite difficult for the rural youth to take full advantage of.

“As such, the government welcomes any suggestions or initiatives from various parties to help the youth in the rural areas to improve on their potential based on the need, without having the need to move to the big city,” he added.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan, State Federal Secretary Mohd Shahabuddin Omar, permanent secretary to the Youth and Sports Ministry Nancy Jolhi, and State Youth and Sports director Azura Sarbin.–DayakDaily.
