MIRI, Sept 18: Aspiring footballers in the northern region and those keen to kick off their football careers have been given a boost with the establishment of five development centres.
In revealing this on Friday (Sept 18) at the launching of football development programme in Miri held at a leading hotel here, Minister of Tourism, Art, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that these five football development centres would involve 13 secondary schools in Miri division.
The programme is held in collaboration with Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) and Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC).
These schools are (PP Baram)-SMK Telang Usan; SMK Tinjar SMK Long Lama; (PP Subis)-SMK Subis; SMK Bekenu; SMK Luar Bandar; (PP Lambir)-SMK Riam;SMK Taman Tunku; (PP Permy)-SMK Merbau; SMK Pujut and (PP Bandar)-SMK ST Columba; SMK ST Joseph and SMK Chung Hua Miri.
“Good players are not created overnight, but instead natural talent and ability must be nurtured in order to enable young players to fulfil their potential.
Karim expressed confidence that these development centres could be the best platform to scout for the best players and players with the potential to become the best.
He said, that his ministry was always giving its support efforts to help empower Sarawakian youth in sports, and football was no exception.
Also present during the programme this morning were Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting and Miri Football association deputy president Nazri Datuk Ahmad Lai. — DayakDailyching.
