KUCHING, Feb 28: The Bagatan community is now recognised as a distinct ethnic group under Sarawak law, no longer classified as a sub-ethnic of any other group.
The people of Nanga Merit, Kapit, gathered at Rumah Philip today for the ‘Kenali Budaya dan Adat Resam Etnik Bagatan’ programme to celebrate their heritage and pass traditions to younger generations.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, highlighted the importance of the community’s recognition.
“Under the Sarawak Government Ordinance gazetted in 2022, all 34 ethnic groups, including Bagatan, are formally recognised.
“The Bagatan community does not need to be listed as a sub-ethnic of any other group. You stand as an ethnic group on your own,” he said.
The recognition follows the Interpretation (Amendment) Ordinance 2022, unanimously passed by the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on February 15, 2022, which updated the official list of indigenous races to include previously unlisted groups such as the Bagatan, Bakong, Bemali, Berawan, Dali, Lakiput, Jatti Miriek, Narom, Sa’ban, Tatau, Tring and Vaie.
The Bagatan community traditionally originates from 18 longhouses in Rajang, Anap (Bintulu), and Penyarai (Tatau). Over the years, migration and modern lifestyles have made it increasingly challenging for younger generations to remain connected to language, customs and longhouse traditions.
The programme gave elders a platform to share knowledge of customary practices, oral history and language with youths, many of whom were experiencing their heritage first-hand for the first time.
Beyond cultural preservation, organisers also emphasised heritage-based entrepreneurship. Participants were introduced to traditional handicrafts, decorative arts and attire rooted in Bagatan identity. These can be potential sources of income for women and young entrepreneurs while also keeping traditions alive.
Supported by the Heritage and Arts Facilitation Fund, the initiative was organised by the Sarawak Entrepreneurs Association in collaboration with the local community.
Also present at the ceremony were Dr Elena Chai, Head of the Heritage and Creative Industry Division; Daniel Batin, representing Kapit Resident Elvis Didit; Kapit District Officer Geoffrey Kendawang; Kapit District Council chairman Andy Lawrence; Penghulu Esik; Kapit District Council member Aman; and Sarawak Entrepreneurs Association secretary Cecilia Lagak, alongside tuai rumah, community leaders, and residents. – DayakDaily
