KUCHING, Dec 9: Government policies must be based on needs, says Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for N12 Kota Sentosa Wilfred Yap Yau Sin.
Emphasising his belief in social justice, he said there should be equality to ensure the same, if not more balanced opportunities within a society or a bigger community, no matter skin colour, religion or culture.
“I believe in policies based on social justice to create a fair and just society.
“I’m a Christian. Whether (you’re a) Christian, Buddhist or Muslim, whether you’re a Chinese, Malay, Bidayuh or Iban, or what you look like or whether you’re rich or poor, the government has the responsibility to ensure that everyone is given the same opportunity.”
Seeing as the majority of the population is just average, he opined there must be policies that prioritise assistance for the poor, the sick and the average as only policies based on social justice, that cater to the masses, are the way forward in every nation.
Yap, who is also the SUPP Kota Sentosa branch chairman, pinpointed Pakatan Harapan (PH)’s miscue as not implementing their well-drafted policies when they held power as government.
“If you look at the opposition, before they gained power, a lot of the things that they said was true, a lot of things that they said could have been done.
“But the problem is they forgot about all their promises when they became government. They kept on talking about need-based policies, but for 22 months they had forgotten about all of them,” he said.
Currently, Yap also heads the SUPP Public Complaints Bureau (PCB). In the coming 12th Sarawak State Election (PRN12), he will be facing off against four candidates from Democratic Action Party (DAP), Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB), Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK), and Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi) respectively. — DayakDaily
