KUCHING, Oct 15: The Ministry of Works (KKR) will install 3,000 light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights in accident-prone areas across the country next year.
In a TVS news, Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this initiative follows the allocation under Budget 2026, which has increased by 3.3 per cent to RM10.692 billion compared to RM10.349 billion in 2025.
“The initiative, implemented under the supervision of the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), aims to enhance road safety nationwide.
“Based on available data, the identified areas for LED installation have consistently recorded high accident rates, and the number of such locations is significant,” he told a press conference after attending KKR’s monthly assembly in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (Oct 14).
Nanta said KKR welcomes the higher allocation, which will be used to implement new projects and ensure the continuation of existing infrastructure developments.
“This includes essential road maintenance works that deserve attention,” he added.
On delayed projects, he noted that fewer than three per cent of all projects fall into that category.
“Although the number is small, we take it seriously. Our goal is to reduce that figure and ideally to zero,” he added.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Works Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan and the ministry’s Secretary-General Datuk Seri Azman Ibrahim. — DayakDaily
