KUCHING, June 22: The Federal Works Ministry is committed to maximising the use of Industrialised Building Systems (IBS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the local construction sector to reduce reliance on foreign workers.
Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that it is a high-impact strategy that the strategic implementation of IBS and BIM will enhance competence and promote the adoption of technology, thereby reducing the construction sector’s dependence on foreign labour.
“Given the current technology adaptation rates in the construction sector at 85.3 per cent for public projects and 81 per cent for private projects, I am confident the initiative to achieve the level of technology adaptation using IBS and BIM to 100 per cent will be achieved with the support and cooperation of all parties,” he said in a post on his social media yesterday (June 20).
This matter was presented and discussed in a special meeting involving Cabinet members and the Ministry’s secretary-general as part of the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan 2021-2025.
Additionally, Nanta also emphasised the importance of skills improvement training and reskilling within the construction sector through the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme.
“This is line with the Prime Minister’s (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) vision to empower the TVET programme and empower the workforce in the construction industry,” he said.
Furthermore, the Ministry has taken proactive measures to ensure the success of this initiative, including the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Holdings and Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) on June 7.
“The MOU is for the improvement of the syllabus regarding modular construction which is part of IBS technology,” he added. — DayakDaily
