KUCHING, Nov 21: The Ministry of Works has expressed deep concern after a fire broke out in a school block at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Baling earlier today.

In a Facebook post, Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the ministry is “taking the incident very seriously” and extends its sympathies to the school community including students, teachers, and staff, who have been affected.

“Our top priority now is to ensure everyone’s safety and to assess the structural integrity of the damaged building.

“To that end, I have directed a technical team from the Public Works Department (JKR) to be dispatched to the site. The team will carry out an early evaluation of the damage, but only after authorities confirm that the area is safe,” he wrote.

He added that the ministry will work closely with the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and local authorities on follow-up actions including repair work and enhanced safety measures.

Earlier today, news portal Kosmo reported that a fire broke out at one of the two-storey blocks of SK Baling at about 10.46am, sending thick smoke billowing from the upper floor.

The school was empty as it was a state holiday, and no casualties were reported. – DayakDaily
