KUCHING, Dec 14: Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has called for the support of all parties in contributing to the funds needed for the construction of a new church in Kuching, which costs approximately RM5.2 million.

Nanta, who is also Kapit MP, said that according to the Local Church Executive Committee (LCEC) chairman and organising committee chairman, Wallace Paul Kilat, the land site for the new church in Kuching has been approved.

“However, the project continues to face financial constraints, as the funds raised to date amount to only about RM1.5 million,” he said in a Facebook post after attending a Christmas fundraising and thanksgiving dinner organised by the Gereja Methodist Iban Bandaraya Kuching dan Kota Samarahan (GMIBK) here on Saturday (Dec 13).

During the event, Nanta also presented RM41,000 to the GMIBK as a show of support for the construction of a new church in Kapit.

“Thankfully, approval from the State planning authorities has been obtained, as announced personally by the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, during his visit to Kapit several years ago.

“Through his concern for the people regardless of race and religion, an allocation of RM3 million via the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) was approved, in addition to a further RM2 million contributed by the Premier. The RM3 million allocation has been disbursed and set aside, with the hope that it will be utilised in the best possible manner,” he said.

Speaking on the event, he described it as one that not only strengthens faith through prayer and thanksgiving but also provides an important platform to foster closer ties, ensuring that harmony and peace in Sarawak’s multi-racial and multi-religious society are preserved. — DayakDaily
