KUCHING, May 15: Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi has expressed hope for the swift establishment of a Joint Sectoral Committee to accelerate the regional recognition of construction standards across Asean.

“With the signing of the Building & Construction Mutual Recognition Arrangement (BCMRA) last year, we now have the opportunity to harmonise standards, reduce trade barriers, and strengthen our region’s resilience — especially in the face of recent disasters in Myanmar and Thailand.

“I’ve urged all Asean counterparts to expedite the ratification process, so we can establish the Joint Sectoral Committee and accelerate regional recognition of our construction standards,” he said in a Facebook post.

The BCWG meeting, which took place from May 14 to 15, 2025, marks a significant milestone under Malaysia’s Asean Chairmanship 2025. Nanta expressed pride in the Ministry of Works Malaysia, particularly its Policy and International Division (BDA), for successfully hosting the meeting.

He also expressed pride in showcasing Sarawakian hospitality to Asean delegates of the BCWG meeting.

“Beyond policies and paperwork, I sincerely hope our delegates feel the true spirit of Malaysian — and Sarawakian — hospitality. From cultural performances to the warmth of our people, we’re proud to offer a meaningful and memorable experience,” he said.

He noted that the delegates will also be visiting the newly completed Makmal Kerja Raya Malaysia (MKRM) Sarawak — a RM27.5 million material testing facility that reflects Malaysia’s commitment to support the industry with world-class infrastructure. – DayakDaily
