KUCHING, March 26: Local authorities (PBT) are advised to appoint district engineers as council members to leverage their expertise for local development, especially in road and building maintenance under Federal and State allocations.

In a news report by TVS, Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this has been proposed as measure to further enhance the role of district engineers.

“District engineer as the head of District Public Works Department (JKR), play a pivotal role in implementing development projects and maintaining roads and buildings funded by Federal and State allocations.

“There is an urgent need for prompt action at the district level, especially concerning emergency and unforeseen works on federal roads,” he said in his ministerial winding up speech on the Royal Address in Dewan Negara today.

Nanta highlighted that in 2023, the Ministry of Finance approved a special allocation of RM100,000 for each district to support district engineers in addressing such urgent matters.

“We have received positive response, with this special allocation proving immensely beneficial and helpful to district engineers,” he added.

Nanta also reminded district engineers to uphold their responsibilities diligently and maintain strong relationships with local leaders and government agencies at the district level as well as the local community.

“Maintaining these connections is paramount, as they facilitate effective execution of duties, ensuring efficient and systematic implementation of infrastructure development agendas at the district level,” he added. — DayakDaily
