SARIKEI, Sept 22: A 34-year-old woman is appealing to authorities for assistance in bringing back her brother, who has fallen prey to a job scam syndicate in Myanmar.
Sarikei District Police Chief, Supt Awang Arfian Awang Bujang, disclosed that the woman filed a report on September 21, expressing concern about her brother’s situation in Myanmar. He is currently in Myanmar with several other Malaysians who have been lured by fraudulent job offers and subjected to mistreatment by their employers.
“Initial investigations indicate that the victim, the complainant’s younger brother, was enticed by a job offer promising a lucrative salary that he found on ‘Facebook.’ The victim was deceived and taken to Myanmar by an agent who promised a monthly salary of RM3,000,” Supt Arfian stated.
He further explained that the victims were coerced into participating in fraudulent activities, and failure to meet their targets would result in fines, abuse, and being compelled to consume non-halal food.
The victim informed his sister that his identity card and passport had been confiscated by his employer, leaving him with no means of escape.
“The complainant lodged a police report out of concern for her brother’s safety and has requested the assistance of relevant authorities to repatriate him to Malaysia,” Supt Arfian added.
He noted that the police are actively working to bring the victim home through coordination with Bukit Aman Interpol and the Malaysian Embassy. — DayakDaily
