SIBU Oct 15: A woman thought she was struck by cupid’s arrow but instead ended up losing RM47,500 in a Love Scam.
Sibu district police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the 60-year old victim who in an administrator of a company, met the suspect on Facebook sometime in July this year.
After four months of getting acquainted with the man who called himself ‘Richie Weng’, he told her that he would be coming to Malaysia to marry her, said Stanley.
He had also given his WhatsApp number to her for easier communication.
The suspect told her that before coming here, he wanted to show his appreciation for her friendship by sending her gifts such as US dollar, gold necklace, a wristwatch and a hand phone,” he added.
Subsequently on October 3, the suspect informed her that the gifts had arrived in the country but they were detained by the Custom Department.
“The victim was told to pay for charges which include Anti-Terrorist Clearance Certificate and Insurance Certificate,” he said.
She had transferred a total of RM47,000 to two different account numbers given by the suspect.
However, after that the suspect again told her to pay for more money. She did not do so as she had run out of money.
“It was only then that she realised she had been duped by the suspect,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.ā DayakDaily
