SIBU, Dec 14: A local woman claimed to have lost RM152,050 to a love scam after making acquaintance with a man through social media some time in September.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the 44-year-old victim befriended the man through Facebook.

“The suspect had on Oct 8 contacted the victim through WhatsApp. He told her that he had been detained by KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) immigration for bringing in a large sum of British pounds.

“The man then asked for her assistance to secure his release,” he said.
As a result of trusting him and sympathising with him, the victim made 12 transactions between Oct 10 and Dec 5 to two different accounts totalling RM152,050.

“However she finally came to her senses and felt that she had been cheated by the man,” he added.

Suhaili advised the public not to easily trust individuals met through social media or easily believe in the stories made up by strangers as well as not to transfer money to those they had just met. — DayakDaily
