KUCHING, Jan 20: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a businesswoman to one year and eight months in jail for impersonating a representative of the Sarawak Chief Minister’s daughter to cheat a Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) advertising and promotion manager to give her 20 Rainforest World Music Festival 2019 (RWMF2019) wristbands.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura found Safferina Talib, 35, guilty of the charge after a full trial.

The prosecution had called seven witnesses to testify while the defendant called two witnesses.

However, the accused through her counsel Jonathan Jalin pleaded for a stay of execution of the sentence.

Magistrate Syarifah allowed the stay of execution with bail of RM5,000 and with one local surety, as well as ordered the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month.

The accused was charged with cheating STB’s advertising and promotion manager by deceiving the latter to believe that the former was a representative of the Sarawak CM’s daughter and was asked to collect 20 pieces of RWMF2019 wristbands for free, at the entrance of Sarawak Cultural Village on July 12, 2019.

She was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment term of between one and 10 years, and whipping, and shall be liable to a fine upon conviction.
