Woman fined RM5,000 for disposing of newborn daughter in a drain

KUCHING, Nov 16: The Magistrate’s Court today sentenced a 20-year-old mother to a fine of RM5,000 for disposing of her newborn daughter in a drain at Bandar Baru Semariang here.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar sentenced the accused to a fine of RM 5,000 or in default of nine months in jail after hearing the social report of the accused by an officer of the Welfare Department.


She allegedly disposed of the dead body of her newborn baby girl by throwing the body into a drain at Bandar Baru Semariang, between 7pm to 12 am on January 18.

She was charged under Section 318 of the Penal Code, which carries an imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or with a fine or both.

According to Kuching Police district chief, ASP Awang Din Awang Gani’s statement on January 19, the medical officer at Sarawak General Hospital examined the accused whom they believed had just given birth.

After interrogation by the police, the accused led the police to the scene where the dead baby was found in the drain.

Prosecuting officer Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted while the accused is unrepresented by counsel. ā€” DayakDaily
