KUCHING, Oct 10: Children in welfare institutions, whose parental status is unknown, will be eligible to receive the ‘K’ indicator on their MyKad (IC) if adopted by families from Sarawak.
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) news report, Sarawak Minister of Women, Early Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK), Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, announced that this decision was approved by the Federal Cabinet under Article 14A of the Federal Constitution on Sept 26, 2024.
“Alhamdulillah, Sarawakian couples who adopt children from welfare institutions can now register the ‘K’ indicator on their identification cards, as agreed by the Cabinet.
“This policy applies regardless of the parental status or background of the adopted child,” she stated.
She made the statement during a meeting with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) Sarawak at her office in Baitul Makmur II Building here yesterday (Oct 9).
Fatimah further clarified that the Cabinet has entrusted the National Registration Department (JPN) with the authority to handle the registration process for these children.
“I would like to inform everyone that the National Registration Department is our key point of authority as it has received Cabinet approval for this matter,” she explained.
Present at the meeting were MCPF chairman See Chee How, Tebedu assemblyman Simon Sinang Bada, Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) Lukas Aket, and other related agencies. — DayakDaily
