KUCHING, March 2: Sri Aman MP Dato’ Seri Doris Sophia Brodie today reaffirmed Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) support for the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, which proposes a 10-year limit on the Prime Minister’s tenure, while highlighting that in exceptional circumstances, a 15-year limit could be considered to ensure continuity of experienced leadership.
Debating the bill in Parliament, Doris warned that a strict ten-year cap could risk the country losing capable, professional and proven leaders.
“In such situations, a ten-year term may be too short to complete long-term reforms, and a more balanced approach allowing up to fifteen years in certain cases should be considered,” she said.
During the debate, Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari interjected, asking whether GPS would oppose the bill if the 15-year proposal was not accepted.
Doris responded firmly, saying, “We will not oppose the bill. This is just a suggestion.”
Earlier, Doris also highlighted practical issues, including how tenure is calculated, the risk of policy gaps if ministers step down alongside the Prime Minister, and the need for interim arrangements after parliamentary dissolution to prevent disruption.
On the economic front, she said the amendment could enhance investor confidence by reducing centralisation of power, but stressed that fiscal and investment policies must remain consistent across leadership transitions. — DayakDaily
