KUCHING, Oct 24: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng says his commitment to serving the people remains unchanged, stressing that his work is driven by responsibility rather than the prospect of contesting in an upcoming election.
He said his focus remained on carrying out his duties as mayor when asked whether he would contest in the upcoming election.
“You cannot say that we only serve the rakyat when an election is approaching. We have been serving the people all this while, and we do so every day as part of our routine work,” he said when speaking to reporters at the Jualan Rahmah MADANI Bergerak programme at Kenyalang Park Community Hall today.
Wee said serving the people was part of his daily responsibilities, not something done only when an election approached.
“We do not serve the people because we want to contest in an election. We do not work hard simply because we want to secure a position. This is my personality and the way I approach my responsibilities,” he said.
Wee added that his commitment to public service was reflected in his early starts and active involvement in community activities, saying he believed in being on the ground to understand residents’ needs and address their concerns.
He also credited effective leadership with motivating councillors and community leaders to remain committed to serving the public, even when their duties required long hours.
Wee said any decision on his candidacy would be left to the party leadership.
He hoped residents would remember his tenure fondly, adding that he wanted to make the most of the responsibility entrusted to him and avoid disappointing public expectations.
MBKS had spent the past eight years strengthening its connection with residents by listening to their feedback and making the council more accessible, including through its ShallWeeTalk Facebook Live programme, held every Saturday at 1.30pm.
He emphasised that the council must remain accessible to the public, as its role as the third tier of government placed it at the forefront of addressing community concerns. — DayakDaily
