KUCHING, Feb 9: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today defended the State’s move into hydrogen and renewable energy, saying the government is “not wrong” in pursuing the policy despite earlier criticism.

He said Sarawak has been looking for alternative energy sources to support economic development, with hydrogen prioritised for use in public transport in urban areas.

“We are trying to adopt hydrogen, and in our cities, public transport is given priority.

“Although I faced criticism, the Sarawak government continues to explore this new energy sector for public transport services,” he said when speaking at the Land and Survey (LANDAS) Summit 2026, which was broadcast live on the Sarawak Public Communication Unit’s (UKAS) YouTube channel.

Abang Johari further said the policy is now showing results as the cost of electrolysis – the process used to split hydrogen from water – is decreasing, similar to developments seen in solar technology.

“Now the cost is lower. In other words, over a period of time, hydrogen will become the energy that propels the economy.

“We are not wrong, and we have not deviated from this policy,” he added.

He added that Sarawak is currently producing hydrogen alongside other renewable energy sources, including hydro, biomass and solar. – DayakDaily
