Wayang St assault: 14 people arrested, released on police bail

KUCHING, September 12: Fourteen suspects who were arrested by the police in relation to a group assault that happened in Jalan Green Hill here were brought before the Magistrate’s Court here today and were released on police bail.

The group assault involving a few men took place in front of a bar at Jalan Wayang, at about 12.30am on September 10. Two videos of the said incident were captured by a complainant and went viral on social media.


When the fight broke out, the complainant tried to move away from the scene and capture video of the incident via his mobile phone. However, the complainant was attacked by a few men which caused the complainant to suffer injury to his head and right eye.

The complainant was then sent to Sarawak General Hospital for further treatment and further examination found that he had bleeding on his brain and so he made a police report for his safety and to claim insurance.

The police then arrested the first suspect at about 11.30am on September 11. There were 14 suspects arrested, aged between 20 and 36.

They were brought before Magistrate Zaiton Anuar by the police who applied for 4 days of remand to further investigate the case.

However, Zaiton released all of them on police bail.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both, for individuals found guilty of rioting, being armed with a deadly weapon or with anything which, used as a weapon of offence, is likely to cause death.

Investigating Officer Muhammad Najib Abu Bakar applied for the remand while 12 of the suspects were represented by counsels Shankar Ram, Russell Lim and Yu Ying Ying. — DayakDaily
