KUCHING, Dec 9: Sarawak is adopting innovative and practical solutions to accelerate its journey toward full Statewide water supply coverage and expanded renewable energy access, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at the International Water Association (IWA) and World Development Congress and Exhibition (WDCE) 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand today, the Premier highlighted the State’s initiatives under the Sarawak Water Supply Master Plan and Water Grid, complemented by the Sarawak Alternative Water Supply (SAWAS) programme, which aim achieve widespread access to clean and reliable water for every community.

“Water is more than a resource; it is a ‘new commodity’ at the heart of Sarawak’s journey toward a resilient and sustainable future. It sustains the livelihoods of our people and powers our green energy ambitions, from hydropower to hydrogen production. Every step we take toward building a sustainable energy future relies on the prudent management and availability of this vital resource,” he said when delivering his keynote address.

Currently, 85 per cent of Sarawak’s population has access to water supply, with rural coverage increasing from 61.9 per cent in 2018 to 71 per cent, reflecting ongoing efforts to extend reliable water services to even the most remote communities.

On renewable energy, the Premier noted that Sarawak is committed to sustainable resource management and low-carbon practices.

“Water is a vital source of energy through both hydropower generation and hydrogen, a clean, emission-free fuel,” he said.

“In collaboration with Sarawak Energy Berhad and SEDC Energy, Sarawak is actively using water to drive the transition toward renewable and sustainable energy.”

He added, “Today, about 62 per cent of our energy already comes from renewable sources, primarily hydropower. Building on this strength, we aim to expand our capacity to 10 gigawatts by 2030 and 15 gigawatts by 2035, securing Sarawak’s energy future and reinforcing our position as the ‘Battery of ASEAN’.”

Meanwhile, the Premier also announced that Kuching will host two major international events: the Borneo International Water and Wastewater Exhibition & Conference (BIWWEC) in 2026, and the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition in 2028. These events will bring together global experts, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss emerging challenges, share best practices, and advance innovation in the water and wastewater sectors. – DayakDaily
