KUCHING, Oct 10: Sarawak’s abundant water resources could give the State an added advantage in attracting data centre investments, complementing its supply of clean electricity, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the parade held in conjunction with the 80th birthday celebration of Sarawak Governor (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Padang Merdeka today, he said water was needed not only for electricity generation but also for cooling systems used in data centres, giving Sarawak an additional advantage over other parts of the country.
“Sarawak is blessed with abundant water resources, which are used to generate clean electricity that forms part of Sarawak’s economic strength, not found in other areas.
“Apart from being used to generate electricity, the abundant resources are also much needed for data centre cooling systems, and compared to other parts of the country, Sarawak also has an advantage in providing water supply for data centres,” he said.
Abang Johari said natural resources must be developed alongside technology, research, innovation and expertise.
He also stressed the importance of human resource development and environmental sustainability in ensuring Sarawak’s resources could support its economic ambitions.
“I am very confident that if these natural resources and energy strengths are combined with technology, research, innovation and expertise, with an emphasis on human resource development and the sustainability of resources and the environment, Sarawak will emerge as a new economic power in the region by 2030, God willing,” he added. — DayakDaily
