MIRI, Nov 26: Miri Airport Staff Club and KRT Krokop Miri emerged champions in the Men’s and Women’s categories, respectively, of the inaugural Miri Mayor Cup 2018 Volleyball Tournament that ended yesterday.
Miri Airport Staff Club beat Riam Road Secondary School in the final that took place at SM Pei Min. Third place went to Barbara VT Kota Kinabalu.
In the Women’s category, KRT Krokop Miri trounced Riam Road Secondary School in the final. Second runner-up was Fire and Ice RRSS Team.
The tournament was played over two days (Nov 24 and 25) at SM Pei Min and SJK (C) Chung San.
It attracted 24 teams, including five from Sabah, Limbang and Lawas.
The prizes for both categories were the same: Winner (RM2,000 cash), first runner-up (RM1,000 cash), and second runner-up (RM500). They also received medals.
Miri mayor Adam Yii gave away the prizes to the winners at SM Pei Min.
Meanwhile, tournament spokesman Azra Ayub said the main objective of the event was to attract more tourists to Miri in conjunction with Visit Miri Year 2018.
“In addition, it also forms part of our effort to unearth new talents for Sarawak,” he said. — DayakDaily
