KUCHING, Dec 15: Sarawak is set to strengthen its position as a national sports hub with the construction of its own velodrome progressing as planned and additional facilities, including a BMX track and rugby infrastructure, being considered near the Sarawak Sports Complex.

Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the proposed velodrome site, spanning between 60 and 70 acres, is strategically located next to the existing Sarawak Sports Complex, allowing for the development of a comprehensive sports precinct.

“The land issue at the initial stage was slightly complicated as it was under private ownership, but the matter is now largely resolved.

“The site is very suitable and its proximity to the Sarawak Sports Complex will make the entire area one of the largest sports zones in Malaysia,” he said when met by reporters after an appreciation ceremony organised by the Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) here on Sunday (Dec 14).

He noted that the velodrome project is expected to significantly raise interest and motivation in competitive cycling, particularly among young athletes.

Abdul Karim added that several follow-up developments have also been proposed for the site, including a BMX track adjacent to the velodrome, given the ample land available.

“There is also interest from other sports, including rugby, to be located within the same area. We will look into the planning and construction of these facilities after the SEA Games,” he said. — DayakDaily
