KUCHING, Sept 22: Minister of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Datuk Julaihi Narawi is leading a delegation for a seven-day benchmarking visit to water regulators and operators in Western Australia from Sept 20 to 26.
In a statement yesterday, Julaihi said the purpose of the visit is to conduct a study on the water industry structures, including legal and regulatory framework, governance, business model, organisational structure, and technology infrastructure.
According to him, the benchmarking visit will provide delegates with an invaluable opportunity to assess Western Australia’s water industry applicability and adaptability to restructure the water supply sector in Sarawak, where suitable models will be adopted for the single water supply entity, including for corporate bodies.
“This benchmarking visit aims towards developing an integrated water supply system and water resources management in Sarawak.
“By acquiring Western Australia’s knowledge and experiences, we hope to put in place a reliable, economical, and sustainable system throughout Sarawak to uplift the economy and social well-being of the rakyat.
“This is in line with initiatives under our Post Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.
During the visit, Julaihi and his entourage paid a courtesy call to the Australian Minister for Training, Water, and Youth, Simone McGurk, who is responsible for water regulation in Western Australia today at the Parliament House of Western Australia.
The delegation also visited the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER), the Economic Regulation Authority (ERA), and the Water Corporation, which is the main water operator in Western Australia, including its Southern Seawater Desalination Plant, Mundaring Dam, Serpentine Dam and Beenyup Advanced Water Recycling Plant. — DayakDaily
