KUCHING, Oct 26: Sarawak is exploring a major investment in an intelligent data centre that could be worth around US$50 billion, with Tanjung Embang among the potential locations for the proposed development.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg confirmed that the reported investment figure was correct but declined to elaborate on the matter.

“The proposed investment could represent a significant development in Sarawak’s ambitions to attract large-scale investments in digital infrastructure,” he told reporters after officiating the Sarawak Urban Forum 2.0 (SUF 2.0) at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) today.

However, details on the investor, project location, implementation timeline and scope have not been made public.

Further information is awaited on the proposed project and its potential implications for Sarawak’s digital economy.

For background, Bernama reported that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim disclosed on Oct 24 that a global investor planned to invest US$50 billion (about RM204 billion) in artificial intelligence (AI), emerging technologies and data centres in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

He said the investor had conveyed the intention during a video conference and described the proposed investment as one of the largest in the region, with the potential to create better employment opportunities, particularly for younger Malaysians. —DayakDaily
