KUCHING, Jan 27: US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D Kagan said Sarawak will always hold a special place in his heart, describing the state as one of the most meaningful to him and his family throughout his tenure in Malaysia.
Speaking during a media session here on Monday (Jan 26) as part of his farewell visit to Sarawak, Kagan said the warmth, openness and hospitality of the Sarawakian people had left a deep and lasting impression on him since his first visit in 2014.
“I truly appreciate the warmth, friendliness and sincerity of the Sarawakian people. Every time I come here, it always brings me joy,” he said, according to a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report.
Kagan, who will conclude his duties as US Ambassador on Feb 15, said Sarawak was significant not only from a diplomatic standpoint but also on a personal level, as he and his family had visited the state many times for both official engagements and family holidays.
Among his most memorable experiences were visits to Bako National Park, Gua Mulu, Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, as well as spending time at local kopitiam in Kuching.
“The fact that one can be in the city centre of Kuching and in less than 40 minutes can see orangutans in their natural habitat is extraordinary,” he said.
He also commended the rapid transformation of Kuching and Sarawak’s broader development, describing the state as increasingly dynamic, energetic and visionary, driven by the state government’s efforts and the active participation of its people.
Despite stepping down from his diplomatic role, Kagan said he intends to continue returning to Malaysia and Sarawak in a personal capacity and remain a strong supporter of United States–Malaysia relations in the years ahead. — DayakDaily
