KUALA LUMPUR, June 26: United Nation’s (UN) recent call to cease all licensing or funding of new oil and gas may deny many nations energy security, says Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) president and group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik.
He said there is no such thing as a perfect set of rules as any transition involves learning, continuous corrections and refinements along the journey.
“We have gathered days after the UN has announced its next Acceleration Agenda which describes fossil fuels as the ‘polluted hard of the climate crisis’ (and) the UN has called for the end of licensing and funding for new oil and gas.
“As we approach COP28, this stance may well deny many nations energy security even as they protect their alienable right to pursue social economic prosperity which others have already attained,” he said during the opening ceremony of the Energy Asia 2023 conference held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) here today.
Thus, he called on the nations which may be implicated by the UN’s stance to start thinking of actionable solutions for a just and responsible energy transition.
He further said Energy Asia is actively working to reduce this carbon footprint as an event towards becoming a lower carbon conference. — DayakDaily
