SIBU, July 22: Around 15,000 participants took part in the Unity Walk held in conjunction with the 2026 Sarawak Day celebration at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang this morning, underscoring the spirit of unity and the celebration of Sarawak’s rich ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.
According to TVS News, the 4.3-kilometre walk around Sibu city centre served as a symbol of togetherness and appreciation for the diversity that continues to define Sarawak’s unique identity and strength.
Participants began gathering as early as 6am before setting off on the route.
Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, arrived at approximately 6.50am to officiate the flag-off ceremony.
They were accompanied by Minister of Transport and minister responsible for the 2026 Sarawak Day celebration Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang, and Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh.
Following the flag-off, Wan Junaidi and Fauziah, together with other dignitaries, toured the 2026 Sarawak Day exhibition held at the grounds of Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang.
The Unity Walk is among the key highlights of the 2026 Sarawak Day Celebration, aimed at strengthening unity, harmony and social cohesion among Sarawak’s multi-ethnic communities.
The route began at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang and passed through Jalan Awang Ramli Amit and Jalan Kampung Datu before returning to the starting point.
The Sarawak Day Celebration in Sibu will culminate tonight with the Sarawak Day Assembly, which will be attended by Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, followed by a People’s Concert. — DayakDaily
