KUCHING, Sept 4: Plans are underway to launch a dedicated United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) office in Sarawak to bring prominent UN events to Sarawak and to serve Sarawakian businesses better.
Describing Sarawak as a “vibrate State”, UNGCMYB executive director Faroze Nadar said on the national level, the organisation’s efforts complement and expand upon its dedicated work in Sarawak.
One initiative, he said, is the ESG SME Hub, which is Malaysia’s first One-Stop ESG Resource Platform for Malaysian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The free-to-use platform, available in BM and English, serves as a comprehensive resource, guiding SMEs in Malaysia through their sustainability journey and ensuring they have access to the latest best practices, tools, and insights.Â
Meanwhile, UNGCMYB has been actively collaborating with Sarawak Energy and their stakeholders over the past four years on various sustainability matters.
“Together, we’ve supported Sarawak Energy in areas ranging from strategy and climate action to organisational culture and supply chain enhancement,” said Faroze during the Special Luncheon Address of the 2023 World Green and Sustainability Summit held at UCIS Hotel here today.
He said by participating in global events such as COP27 and focusing on initiatives like the SDC (Sustainable Development Goals) Movement on Sustainable Supply Chains and SMEs, Sarawak Energy and UNGCMYB have jointly emphasised the importance of a sustainable supply chain.
Furthermore, UNGCMYB has provided ESG (Environmental, social and governance) capacity-building programmes for SEB’s supply chain members, with the first cohort of 20 SMEs already benefiting and many more set to join in subsequent phases.Â
Internally, programmes such as the Sustainability Culture kit are designed to engage employees on sustainability and create a collective sustainability-centric culture.Â
“I am happy to share that in 2021, we successfully featured our collaboration with SEB (Sarawak Energy) as a best practice case study in Malaysia VNR (Voluntary National Reviews).”
To him, collaboration in the journey towards a sustainable future is not only a strategy but a necessity. Â
“By pooling our resources, knowledge and expertise, we can amplify our impact and accelerate the pace of positive change.
“Together, we are not just envisioning a sustainable future; we are actively creating it,” said Faroze. — DayakDaily
