Unidentified man killed in hit-and-run along Miri-Bintulu road, police looking for witnesses and victim’s identity

KUCHING, Oct 20: A male pedestrian, believed to be in his 40s or 50s, was killed in a hit-and-run accident along the Pan Borneo Highway at KM826.9 near Ladang 3 in Miri yesterday afternoon (Oct 19).

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the incident occurred around 4.40pm along the Miri-Bintulu stretch, involving an unidentified vehicle and the victim who was walking along the road.

“Initial investigation found that the victim was walking when he was hit from behind by a vehicle that has yet to be identified.

“The victim died at the scene and was confirmed dead by a medical officer from Ladang 3 Health Clinic at about 4.05pm,” he said in a statement today.

Police said the victim, who has yet to be identified, was last seen by members of the public on Oct 16 around Kampung Subis 1, about 5km from the crash site. He was seen walking shirtless and wearing shorts.

A physical examination revealed that the victim was slightly plump and had no visible tattoos on his body.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Police have urged anyone with information about the incident or those who may recognise the victim to contact Investigating Officer Insp. Mohammad Amiruddin Hamdan at 018-9529957 or 085-433400, or to approach the nearest police station.
