KUCHING, May 26: A jobless woman has pleaded not guilty to a charge of physically abusing her 10-year-old daughter.

Safina John, 27, pleaded not guilty to the charge framed before Sessions Court Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.

Judge Afidah released the accused on RM15,000 cash bail with two local sureties and fixed the case for management on July 3.

Safina allegedly abused her 10-year-old daughter at a unit at PPR Batu Gong at about 8pm on May 19.

She was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 20 years, or both upon conviction.

According to the brief facts of the case, it was their neighbor who heard suspicious sounds coming from the unit where the accused was staying and lodged a police report thereafter.

It was found that the victim had suffered an injury on her back and was later received treatment at a hospital.
