Unemployed man gets jail, whipping for drug possession

KUCHING, Oct 15: An unemployed man was sentenced to three years’ jail and four strokes of the rotan by the Magistrate’s Court here today after he pleaded guilty to possessing 6.24 grammes of syabu last year.

Abang Asrul Effenby Abang Seruji, 38, who was not represented, committed the offence at around 11.20pm, in a house at Taman Sukma, on July 11, 2018.


He was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1951 and punishable under Section 39A(1) of the same Act, which carries imprisonment between two years and five years, and whipping between three strokes and nine strokes, upon conviction.

Judge Nuruhuda Mohd Yusof ordered the accused to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest.
