KUCHING, Sept 19: The United Kingdom (UK) recognises Sarawak’s semiconductor ambitions and is keen to support the State throughout its journey.

According to a press release, this was said by the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ailsa Terry, who led a delegation from the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur to SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd (SMDS)— Sarawak’s innovative chip design and technology solution provider and a subsidiary of Sarawak Research Development Council (SRDC).

“This is a real area of growth in UK-Malaysia collaboration. The UK’s strengths are in research and development, design, and compound semiconductors.

“We want to collaborate with international partners in the semiconductor sector to support our shared ambitions and reinforce global supply chains,” she said.

The press release also added that the visit highlighted Sarawak’s central role in Malaysia’s semiconductor landscape and reflects Sarawak’s rapid establishment as a global hub for semiconductor innovation and talent development.

“The visit by the British High Commission delegation acknowledged Sarawak’s remarkable progress in this dynamic industry.

“It serves as a testament to the region’s steadfast commitment to becoming a prominent player in the semiconductor, aligning with our aspiration to be recognised as a global hub for technological excellence,” said SMDS Board of Director Azmi Bujang.

He highlighted that the visit infused renewed optimism and motivation into the company, which is committed to revolutionising the semiconductor industry in Sarawak, fostering talent development, and advancing digital and IR4.0 applications that prioritise environmental sustainability. — DayakDaily
