BAU, Dec 24: The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) has been urged to investigate the cause of flooding in Kampung Jugan here as the area had experienced floods twice after the Pan Borneo Highway was implemented.

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas learnt that before the implementation of the Pan Borneo Highway, the village had not experienced any flooding.

“We were informed that there are issues. The first is about the problem with the sewers in the downstream area, which may not be sufficient to release water.

“For information, floods have happened here only twice, and there were no floods before the Pan Borneo Highway was constructed.

“This is from JKR, so their team will see if the sewer is the cause. If it is true, it would be easier for us to find a way to solve the problem,” he said during a visit to the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) at Kampung Jugan yesterday (Dec 23).

Uggah, also Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman, said the relevant authorities would continue to monitor the situation at all the PPS that have been activated to ensure that flood victims receive proper care and food supplies.

The Kampung Jugan PPS was opened at 1.40am on Dec 23, which recorded the evacuation of 40 flood victims from 15 families.

The temporary shelter was closed at 8am today, and victims were allowed to return to their respective homes as the flood situation improved.
