Uggah urges construction firms to equip more local workers with specialised skill sets

BINTULU, April 23: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas is urging construction companies to equip more local workers with specialised skill sets.

He said this could build up a pool of specialist workers and solve the problem of shortage of such workers which would affect the completion schedule of local projects.

“Then we will not have to depend so much on foreigners,” he said when attending a briefing on the construction progress of the RM467 million Bintulu-Jepak Bridge crossing Kuala Kemena at the contractor’s office here today.

The project is a joint venture between PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and China Communications Construction Company (M) Sdn Bhd.

Uggah, who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, also called on relevant authorities to speed up the approval of visa for foreign specialist workers needed for the completion of some major infrastructure projects in Sarawak.— Dayakdaily
