KUCHING, April 25: The establishment of a plot by top seed research, development and production company from West Malaysia, Green World Genetics Sdn Bhd (GWG) will give Betong Division a head start as a major food hub.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas in a statement today said GWG company started its core business of researching, developing and producing high quality tropical fruits and vegetables seeds on a 27.59 hectares plot at Simpang Debak three years ago.

According to Uggah, apart from producing fruits and crops, the company is also marketing its seeds worldwide.

“In Betong Division and notably in Bukit Saban, we see a lot of potential in this new industry of seed production.

“The markets for high quality seed are also vast and such seeds are quite costly,” he said.

He said GWG would act as an anchor company for seed supply while local smallholders will be its contract farmers.

He also said the company will provide the necessary training which allows local farmers to sell their seeds to the company to be processed and pack for outside markets.

“Together with the Agriculture Department here, we will identify those interested, from our local farmers,” he added.

On whether farmers would be receptive to this concept, Uggah said a number of them had visited the Simpang Debak station and were mesmerised by the developments there.

“Some farmers here had started their own modern agriculture endeavors with quite promising results,” he said. — DayakDaily
