Uggah: Covid-19 strain in Pasai Siong ‘very infectious’

KUCHING, Jan 26: The Covid-19 strain in Pasai Siong in Sibu has been described as very infectious and has spread to many districts across Sarawak.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said the committee was taken aback by the Covid-19 strain from the Pasai Cluster which has spread to other rural districts.


“Today, it (Pasai Cluster) has reached a total of 1,582 cases. It has spread all over Sarawak.

“That’s why this battle against Covid-19 is very challenging as there are various mutations. It was quite a surprise to us that this Pasai strain is so infectious

“Every day, the Sibu number has been high as compared to other districts,” he told a press conference here when giving updates on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak today.

The Pasai Cluster in Sibu is witnessed an increase of 111 new cases today.

There were 41 cases in Kanowit, 29 cases in Sibu, 22 cases in Dalat, 10 cases in Miri, three cases in Kapit, three cases in Julau, two cases in Betong one case in Sarikei linked to the Pasai Cluster,

A total of 16,550 individuals linked to the cluster have been swabbed so far, with 1,582 testing positive, 13,680 testing negative and 1,288 still awaiting test results.

The Pasai Cluster was confirmed on January 9 with its index cased identified as a woman who returned from Johor to attend a funeral of her relative last year at a longhouse in Pasai Siong, Sibu.

She later tested positive for Covid-10. — DayakDaily
